Seminarian Intern

Jeremy shafer

My name is Jeremy Shafer, a seminarian in Theology III for the Diocese of Cleveland. I am the youngest of four siblings and was raised in Olmsted Falls, where I also attended public school 1-12. St. Mary’s in Berea has been my family’s parish for my whole life, and I received all of my sacraments there. Some of my interests include gardening, history, and camping, the latter of which was instilled in me from my eight years of being a Boy Scout in Troop 228, also in Berea.

I first thought about a vocation to the priesthood when I was a sophomore in high school. I had only recently started to take my faith seriously and was making an effort to pray more often and to be attentive at mass so I could grow closer to the Lord. At that time, a seminarian gave his witness at St. Mary’s about his own vocation, and I was truly inspired by his faith and what God was doing in his life. After hearing him speak, I got to thinking that perhaps I was being called to a similar life, and thus started my journey to the priesthood. I enrolled at Franciscan University of Steubenville in the Fall of 2018, where, in addition to getting my bachelor's in philosophy and marketing, I also participated in the university’s Priestly Discernment Program. In that program, I discerned my vocation along with other men on campus and received great spiritual direction from the priest faculty, helping me to hear God’s voice. At the same time, I was also in contact with the Diocese of Cleveland, and preparing to enter the diocesan seminary as soon as I graduated, which I did in 2022. Since then, I’ve been learning a lot in my seminary courses, but I am especially excited to get some hands-on education right here in Brunswick. As I am here for the next year, please be sure to introduce yourself to me, and to especially pray for me as I navigate life in the parish!
